The only successful treatment for vision disturbing natural lens opacification, the so called cataract, is cataract surgery, in which the natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations worldwide - with over 27 million interventions every year. Monofocal intraocular lenses (standard IOL) are the most widespread standard care.
